Quiet times with God

For the younger Born Again Christians of this world and for those non-believers who have Christian friends the term “quiet time”  must have come up in conversation.  Quiet time is a vitally important part of a Christian walk; many Christians will tell you that it is the most important and often the most enjoyable part of their day. For some “quiet time” is early in the morning, for others it is at a given moment of their day and for those who have a crazy day it is later in the day as they unwind and let go.

Quiet time with God is time where the Bible is open, the ears are listing and conversation happens as if God is in the room. You may have heard the phrase “You’ve gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, Love like you’ll never be hurt, Sing like there’s nobody listening, And live like it’s heaven on earth” (William W. Purkey) and that same passion in its own unique way goes into and is found in one’s quiet time with God. The time may well be peaceful and things may well be at ease but the conversation between the believer and God is on fire and that is what makes it so powerful.

Matthew 6:6 tells us to go and pray in the quietness of our room or quiet place “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

And Jesus Himself went to a quiet place to be with his Father in Matthew 14:22-23 “Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone” NIV

Being alone and being quiet is not so much what God commands but like anything that is important it is best done when calm and at ease and a meeting with God is very important.  In one’s Quiet time with God, with nobody watching (remember Purkey’s Dancing) God shines through, confidence is found and bible scriptures become clear. In the peace and quiet at the time of your choosing God will guide you, ask Him to tell you where to open your Bible and He will, and life’s problems become open and solutions are found. Likewise quiet time is a time to say thank you, and say so because it is right.  As in James 4:8 “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

Quiet time with God is essential for Gods work in you to be fulfilled and the Message Bible sums it up so very well in its translation of James 4:8-10 “So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”

Do you want life?  Yes, then get outrageous with your quiet time and let God work in you.
